This early Beccon publication, was produced for the convention in 1983
where Ken Bulmer was to be GOH. The committee asked him for a
bibliography/list of works so that they could print it in the programme
book. He replied that he couldn't recall all the details, but he was
sure that Ian Covell - an inveterate biliographer - could do much
better. Having obtained a detailed listing from Ian the compiler
visited Ken at his home in Tunbridge Wells and was able to add even
more flesh onto the bibliography.
As well as the bibliography, which reveals twenty or so pseudonyms, the booklet includes two specially written articles. The first is by Ken Bulmer entitled "On the Pen-Name Trail" and the other is an appreciation of Ken by the critic, reviewer and encyclopaedist John Clute. ... a note from the compiler ... "Excluded are all the work done for boys' "picture-library" magazines. These included some or all of the stories for The Steel Claw and Jet Ace Logan, as well as many war stories and a 'drowned-world' series." A note on the second edition. After two and a half years or so a reprint was needed and the opportunity was taken to correct a few minor errors and add some new and/or updated information. |

Henry Kenneth Bulmer (1921-2006) was born in London,
England, and lived for much of his life in Tunbridge Wells. He was an
extraordinarily prolific writer, penning more than 150 novels and
innumerable short stories. He was perhaps best-known for the
long-running Dray Prescot series - initially published as by Alan Burt
Akers, and later as by the protagonist of the series, Prescot himself.
Bulmer's works are popular in translation in some non-English-speaking countries, particularly Germany, and Japan. Bulmer was also active in science fiction fandom, including travelling to the United States in 1955 as the Transatlantic Fan Fund (TAFF) delegate. In the 1970s he edited nine issues of the New Writings in Science Fiction anthology series in succession to John Carnell, who originated the series. |
